Short Film Analysis:

Push: short film about gangs

Narrative: In this short film there is a white girl called Becky who is targeted by a gang because the police don’t stop white people as much as they do with black people so she is targeted by the gang so that they can drug deal with other people and get money illegally. Becky is now a part of the gang as the leader’s girlfriend and his name is Tyrone. Her friend Jermaine is worried for her as she is now in this gang and she has changed her personality know as before she was different. Jermaine still wants to play football with Becky so they play football together even when Tyrone and his gang are watching her. Becky sees a girl named Tasha talking with Tyrone and then tries to fight her because Becky thinks that Tasha is trying to take Tyrone away from her/trying to be Tyrone’s girlfriend instead of Becky, but before Becky can try to hit Tasha, Jermaine stops Becky and wants to know what's wrong with her, but Becky doesn’t want to say anything. After this scene we have a scene where her mother is washing something in the sink and Becky walks out of the shot so her mother picks up her phone and starts reading the messages. After this we see Becky standing in a park looking down at her phone and then suddenly she looks up and winks at a man that comes to her gives her money then he walks away and then shortly after another man comes and gives her money and then we see him walk to one of the gang members that is on the other side of the park near the fence and he gives the man that gave Becky the money drugs. We can also see this gang member in Becky’s shot but in the background. After this scene at the park, we see Becky walking home as a police van drives past her and this is to be expected because this is why Tyrone chose her because they suspect that she will not be stopped even when carrying drugs because she is white. Then when she gets home, her mother is going through Becky’s room and has found something in tin foil and money that does not belong to her as she is worried about Becky. Her mother then confiscates the money and the tin foil and walks out of the room where we see Becky reaching on top of a cupboard to find a bag of drugs which she then hides back on top of the cupboard. We then have a scene where Becky is with Tyrone and two other gang members and then Tyrone pulls out a gun and tells Becky that he wants her to hold it for them and then when Becky gets scared Tyrone points the gun at Becky and threatens Becky with damaging her mum’s car as he knows where she lives if she doesn’t hold the gun for him. Becky then runs out of the room afraid. In the next scene we hear a car alarm and glass breaking and we can assume that was Becky’s mothers’ car as she is then on the phone saying to Tyrone that he didn’t have to do that but because she is so scared she says that she will hold the gun for him. After this we see Becky drug dealing and then we see a guy in the background(but before we see the guy, we are in first person of his point of view of Becky) on the phone after looking at Becky and we would assume he is on the phone to the police as in the next scene she is stopped by to police officers and is told by them that a member of the public has seen her drug dealing, as the police officers search Becky they find a firearm in her bag and then she is arrested. After she is arrested we then see her in court as she is being sentenced to a young offender institution for a total of 24 months. The magistrate says she is lucky that she is below the age of 18 otherwise if she was over 18 she would have been sentenced for 4 years in prison for possession of a firearm. She is then seen being upset as she probably regrets doing all of this and then this is the end of the short film as the credits are shown. Conflict is identified at the start where Becky is recruited into the gang. It is explored and developed through the middle of the short film as we see Becky’s life when she is at home with her mother whilst being a drug dealer at the same time, it is also developed by showing us(the audience) how much she was targeted and then convinced by the gang to drug deal. This short film is resolved when Becky is in the court and gets sentenced. I think there is clear use of the 3 act structure as the setup would be the start of the short film where Becky is recruited into the gang, the confrontation would be when she is drug dealing and the Resolution would be when she is being sentenced.

Character: Becky is presented as a vulnerable girl not just because of her actions but because of her race she is targeted by the gang to sell drugs as the police will most likely not stop her because of the colour of her skin. She is also presented as a scared girl who doesn’t know how to get out of bad situations even when there are people who care about her and who would help her if she would of just spoken about it. For example Jermaine as when they were playing football and Becky stopped to try and fight Tasha, he stopped her from fighting and then wanted to find out what was wrong with her but she didn’t want to speak to him. Jermaine is presented as the caring friend that wants to help their friend even if they are in trouble and wants the best for Becky as he is seen at the start of the short film telling Becky why she is hanging out with the gang. Tyrone is created as the leader of the gang and the one who makes the most decisions/has the most power as he uses a lot of inappropriate language and violence. For example, when Tyrone points the gun at Becky and also threatens her. Tasha is presented as the person/girl who aggravates Becky even when she does nothing to offend Becky. For example, when Tasha was seen by Becky speaking to Tyrone so this aggravated Becky to try and fight Tasha. Becky’s mother is presented as a caring and worried parent as she is worried about Becky being a drug dealer even when Becky refuses to speak to her. The magistrate is presented as the resolution for the short film as she sentences Becky for 24 months and then we see Becky upset and then the short film ends.

Mise – en – scene: The locations used are mostly exterior like the park, or on the pavement or in the tunnel but there are some interior locations like Becky’s house and Tyrone’s house. The costumes mostly used in this short films are clothes like streetwear clothes such as hoodies, trouserst-shirts and trainers. The props used in this short films are: Phones, Bags, a football, money, drugs(bags with white powder inside), a gun etc. There isn’t a lot of lighting as most of the scenes are filmed outside in the daytime but for the scenes that were filmed inside you can see the lights on (in the court, in Tyrone’s house) but in Becky’s room when the camera is focused on the mother’s face, I think a light orange was used to see the mother in the scene much more clearly.

Cinematography: The style of camerawork used is that most of the camera positioning is stationary except for scenes like when Becky and Jermaine are playing football the camera is more movable.

Editing: The transitions included are things like cut to, this is used between most scenes.

Sound: The use of diegetic sound is presented in this short film by Dialogue and background noise, for example the car alarm going off in the background as Tyrone has smashed it to threaten Becky. The use of non–diegetic sound is presented in this short film by the music.

Conclusion: The narrative/story is effective from the short film because it clearly shows the three-act structure. The three-act structure is shown as the setup would be at the start of the short film where Becky is recruited into the gang, the confrontation would be when she is drug dealing and the Resolution would be when she is being sentenced.

Secondary Research:

Why young people join street gangs?

Young people can join a gang for:

  • recognition

  • excitement

  • friends

  • acceptance

  • a sense of belonging

  • power over other people

  • money from crime

  • protection

  • territory

  • respect

Being in a gang - the fantasy and reality

Children may think that being in a gang will give them an exciting lifestyle. Being in a gang puts children and young people at more risk of:

  • committing crime

  • dealing or taking drugs

  • ending up in prison

  • being a victim of violence or even death

Getting a criminal record:

Young people can get arrested for carrying a gun or a knife. They could go to court and get a criminal record that will affect the rest of their life. Having a criminal record can prevent people from getting a job, going to university or college, or even travelling abroad.
